“I could die eating paya at Taj Lands End..” – Ranbir Kapoor
In Conversation with Aarti Kapur Singh

I want to experience the hospitality of Planet Hollywood firsthand
Ranbir Kapoor
Actor

He may have been born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but paradoxically Ranbir Kapoor is not comfortable with luxury. The scion of India's oldest filmi family is also a fan of everything desi. You would have heard him talking about movies and women but in a chat with The Hotel Explorer he talks about what we love talking about- hotels. Read on to know more.

Which is your favourite hotel in the world and why?

It has to be the Taj Land’s End in Mumbai. For two reasons – one because I am a lazy traveler – I actually don’t remember too many places where I stay and secondly, to borrow a ditty from my grandfather’s song – phir bhi dil hai Hindustani!

But this isn’t really the only reason you know. I think Taj has an excellent location – perched on a rock that faces the Arabian Sea. And the grandeur of the location translates into everything that the hotel does.

Such as?

The food, for starters. I dare you to finish their paya by yourself. And since I want to see myself winning, I will take you! That paya can make you live even if you are dying – it is that rich. Even if I have to eat it, I have to starve myself for a day before and after. And that says a lot for the paya because I am a Kapoor and we live for paya.

What about the rooms?

Well actually that is one thing I am not very comfortable with – and it is a paradox. Let me explain – the rooms are just too luxurious and neat – sometimes overtly so. To me, that is not homely. Any place has to have that ‘lived-in’ feel for me to really feel comfortable. In fact whenever I travel to any hotel, I do make it a point to turn a few things upside down. I prefer the comfort that chaos lends.

Any other hotel that you would want to travel to or stay in?

I keep reading about so many places and there are lots of them. But at the top of my mind right now is Planet Hollywood – considering they are coming to India. I have heard legends about the way they pamper their guests and am eager to experience it firsthand.
